Usage
Estrogens direct the development of the female genotype in embryogenesis and at puberty. Estradiol is the major
estrogen secreted by the premenopausal ovary. Estradiol benzoate is an estradiol analog which contains a benzyl
ester at the C-3 position and is often used in combination with a progestin to induce estrus in domestic livestock.
This compound binds to the human and murine estrogen receptor α (ERα), and chicken ER with IC50 values in
the range of 22-28 nM. This reflects a 6-10 fold reduction in binding affinity compared to estradiol.
Description:
Estradiol cypionate , or estradiol cipionate, is a synthetic ester, specifically the 3-cyclopentylpropanoyl ester, of the natural estrogen, estradiol. It was first introduced in 1952 by Upjohn in the United States, and has been in widespread use since. Estradiol cypionate is absorbed more slowly than estradiol itself, and for that reason, it can be administered less often.Compared to other commonly used estradiol esters, via the intramuscular route, estradiol cypionate was found to have the longest duration of action with a duration of ~11 days, while estradiol benzoate and estradiol valerate were found to last for 4-5 days and 7-8 days, respectively.
Applications:
Estradiol is produced especially within the follicles of the female ovaries, but also in other endocrine (i.e., hormone-producing) and non-endocrine tissues (e.g., including fat, liver, adrenal, breast, and neural tissues). Estradiol is biosynthesized from progesterone (arrived at in two steps from cholesterol, via intermediate pregnenolone). One principal pathway then converts progesterone to its 17-hydroxy derivative, 17-Hydroxyprogesterone, and then to 4-androstenedione via sequential cytochrome P450-catalyzed oxidations.[citation needed] Action of aromatase on 4-androstenedione generates estrone, and action of a dehydrogenase on this gives the title compound, 17β-estradiol.[citation needed] Alternatively, 4-androstenedione can be converted into the androgen, Testosterone, which in turn can be converted directly into 17β-estradiol.
